New patients · What to expect
If you have never seen an osteopath before, or have had mixed experiences elsewhere, here is exactly what happens when you come to Osteopath Redditch. From the moment you book to the moment you leave.
Your appointment, step by step
Before any examination or treatment begins, Reece will ask about your presenting complaint in detail. When did it start, how did it happen, what makes it better or worse, what you have tried already, and what your goals are.
He will also ask about your general health, any medications, previous injuries, and your training or lifestyle habits. This is not box-ticking. It shapes everything that follows.
Reece will assess how you move, where you load, and what is restricted or overworking. Depending on the area being assessed, this may involve removing some clothing. You will always be advised what is needed and why, and you are free to decline any part of the examination.
For most musculoskeletal complaints, the examination includes active movement, passive testing, orthopaedic tests, and palpation of the relevant structures.
Before treatment starts, you will be told exactly what Reece has identified, what is driving the problem, and what the plan is. Not in jargon. In plain language that makes sense.
If further investigation such as imaging is indicated, he will tell you. If osteopathy is not the right approach for your problem, he will tell you that too.
Where appropriate, treatment starts at your initial appointment. The approach varies depending on the patient and the presentation. It may involve soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, articulation, or other techniques. You will be told what is being done and why at each stage.
You are in control throughout. If anything is uncomfortable or you want to stop, say so.
At the end of your appointment you will know what the problem is, what has been done today, what to expect in the coming days, how many sessions are likely to be needed, and what you can do between sessions to support your recovery.
You will also receive home exercises where relevant. These are specific to you, not a printed generic handout.
Before you arrive
You will not be passed to an associate or seen by someone different. Every appointment is with Reece, from first assessment to discharge.
Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. For lower back, hip or leg presentations, shorts are helpful. For upper body and shoulder presentations, a vest or loose t-shirt works well.
Your initial appointment can take up to 60 minutes. Follow-up appointments are up to 45 minutes. Do not schedule anything immediately afterwards. Do not schedule anything immediately afterwards.
Common questions
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly without a referral from your GP. Osteopathy is a primary contact profession, meaning you can come straight to Reece without seeing your doctor first.
Will it hurt?
Some techniques can feel uncomfortable, particularly if there is significant restriction or inflammation. Reece will always work within your tolerance and will check in throughout the session. Post-treatment soreness for 24 to 48 hours is normal and usually settles quickly.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies significantly depending on the nature of the problem, how long it has been present, and how your body responds to treatment. Reece will give you an honest estimate at your first appointment. He does not prescribe unnecessary follow-up sessions.
Can I keep training during treatment?
In most cases, yes. Unless complete rest is genuinely necessary, Reece will work with you to maintain as much activity as possible while your body recovers. He will advise on what to modify, what to avoid temporarily, and how to build back up progressively.
What is the cancellation policy?
A 50% prepayment is required to secure your appointment. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice will forfeit the deposit. Cancellations with more than 24 hours notice can be rescheduled or refunded.
Is osteopathy covered by health insurance?
Many private health insurance policies do cover osteopathy. Check with your provider before booking. Reece can provide receipts and treatment notes for insurance purposes on request.
